Prof Charles Anosike, Director General and CEO of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), led the NiMet delegation to the 5th Network for Education and Research on Peace and Sustainability (NERPS) conference, held from 4–7 March 2026 at the United Nations University (UNU) Headquarters in Tokyo.

The NERPS 2026 Conference focused on the role of technology in advancing multilateral cooperation for peace and sustainability.

The conference commenced with a welcome address by Prof Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of UNU and UN Under-Secretary-General.

Keynote speeches followed, delivered by Dr. Måns Nilsson, Executive Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), and Rumiko Seya, President of Reach Alternatives (REALs).

Throughout the event, Prof Charles Anosike and the NiMet team took part in parallel sessions covering a range of topics.

These included climate action, disaster resilience, migration, climate change mitigation, sustainable peace, security, sustainable agriculture, and environmental sustainability, both on land and below water.

During the discussions, the team contributed to reviews and dialogues centred on climate governance, urban resilience, equitable climate justice, transboundary resource management, and methods for monitoring and predicting environmental changes.

The NiMet team’s active engagement in the conference fostered knowledge exchange and strengthened partnerships with international stakeholders.

Their contributions were instrumental in shaping discussions on climate action and sustainable development, enhancing Nigeria’s profile and impact within the global sustainability community.
