The Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, has called for heightened vigilance and immediate precautionary measures following the Agency’s latest National Flood Advisory, which places 33 states across the country at high risk of riverine flooding from 19 to 25 August 2026.

The DG/CEO disclosed that 92 gauging stations are currently at risk, with rising river stages expected to trigger flooding in vulnerable communities, particularly those located along river channels, low-lying areas and floodplains.

Among the key monitoring locations identified are Katsina Ala on the Katsina Ala River, Dadin Kowa (Gombe-Biu Bridge) on the Gongola River, and Sokoto (Illela Bridge) on the Rima River.

Umar Ibrahim Mohammed urged communities living in flood-prone areas to take the latest advisory seriously and act before floodwaters rise.

“We are calling on communities in vulnerable areas not to wait until flooding occurs before taking action. Where necessary, people, livestock and valuables should be moved immediately to safer and higher ground. Early action saves lives and reduces losses.”

He called on state governments, local authorities, emergency management agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders and other stakeholders to strengthen preparedness measures and activate local early-warning mechanisms.

The DG/CEO further urged authorities and communities to pre-position relief materials, water-treatment supplies and first-aid equipment, while identifying and preparing safe shelters for persons who may need to evacuate.

He also advised members of the public to remain vigilant and avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges and fast-moving water, either on foot or in vehicles.

“Floodwater can be deceptive and extremely dangerous. We strongly advise the public not to take unnecessary risks by attempting to cross flooded roads, bridges or waterways,” he cautioned.

The NiHSA helmsman also called for the immediate clearing of blocked drainage channels and river outlets, stressing the importance of keeping waterways free from obstructions during the period of heightened flood risk.

He urged communities to mobilise early-warning volunteers who can help disseminate official information and support vulnerable residents in taking timely action.

Umar Ibrahim Mohammed reiterated NiHSA’s commitment to providing timely hydrological information and early warnings to support disaster preparedness and protect lives and property across the country.

He urged the public to remain alert throughout the advisory period and to regularly follow official NiHSA bulletins and updates as river conditions continue to be monitored.

“Flood preparedness is a shared responsibility. Let us act early, stay informed and protect lives and livelihoods,” the DG/CEO said.
