The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) held a five-day training workshop which opened in Abuja, Monday, 22nd July, 2024.

The training workshop which hinges on numerical weather prediction (NWP) data assimilation drew participants from Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, and Togo.

The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), and the Permanent Representative of Nigeria with WMO, Professor Charles Anosike welcomed participants to NiMet Headquarters in Abuja, venue of the training.

He said: At NiMet, we are committed to advancing meteorological science and improving our weather prediction capabilities.

“We recognize that capacity building and continuous professional development are essential components of this mission.

“This workshop aligns perfectly with our goals, and we are delighted to host such a pivotal event”.

Professor Anosike thanked the WMO for their contributions towards capacity development among NMHS in West Africa.

Anosike said: “Around this time a year ago, Dr Kyungjeen Park, a Numerical Weather Prediction expert from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) was in Nigeria to conduct training on operationalising Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model for the Agency.

“We are glad to report that the model has been implemented and operational. We want to say ‘thank you’ to WMO and to Dr Park.

“Over the next few days, participants will be engaged in intensive training sessions, hands-on exercises, and collaborative discussions.

“I encourage you all to actively participate, learn from each other and share experiences”.

The training workshop ends on Friday, 26th July, 2024.
