The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) responded promptly to a flash flood incident that affected parts of Maiduguri and Jere Local Government Areas in the morning of today, Wednesday, 30th July 2025, following hours of intense rainfall.

Upon receiving reports of the incident, NEMA, through its Maiduguri Operations Office, immediately activated its emergency response mechanism and deployed Rescue team in collaboration with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (BOSEMA), Federal Fire Service, the Nigerian Police, the State Fire Service, and other critical stakeholders to affected communities to assist residents and mitigate the impact of the flooding.

The flooding was attributed to sustained heavy downpours, compounded by poor drainage infrastructure and the construction of buildings along natural water channels.

Among the most severely affected areas were Bolori community behind the gas plants—where over 20 households were inundated—as well as the Ibrahim Taiwo police station area along Baga Road, Bulumkutu Kasuwa (where most houses were submerged), Bulumkutu Abuja, and parts of Damboa Road.

As of midday, during rapid assessments of the situation, floodwaters had receded significantly across the affected communities, with normal activities gradually resuming.

However, given the continued rainfall in the region, NEMA and its partners have intensified surveillance and monitoring to ensure early warning and timely response to any future occurrences.
