The Director General/CEO, of Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed has said that NIHSA was carrying out National Survey of major rivers and Tributaries to identify strategic Rivers to be instrumented and monitored as from next year in order to enhance the Agency’s Flood Prediction and Early Warning Systems for the safety of lives, farmlands and property.

In a statement signed on Monday, DG NIHSA said that his Agency was committed to continue to improve on its monitoring strategies on both surface and groundwater reserves to meet up with the International best practices and minimize the effect of flooding in Nigeria.

Mohammed said that the devastating floods that occurred this year were mostly due to excessive rainfall and Climate Change.

He said that due to the expected cessation of rain in the Northern and Central parts of the country, the water levels in Rivers Niger and Benue were steadily receding below flood level in the past weeks.

Mohammed emphasized that flooding incidence had greatly subsided, noting that the Agency was taking proactive steps to do some intervention studies in some flood affected states in order to know why floodwaters do not receed for further flood preventive measures.

The DG further thanked all Nigerians and Stakeholders for the role they played in safeguarding lives and property.
