The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening collaboration between government institutions and the civil society through the Open Government Partnership (OGP) platform.
The Minister of Youth Development and State Actor Co-Chair of the OGP, Nigeria, Mr Ayodele Olawande, reiterated this while receiving a delegation from the civil society actors and representatives of the OGP secretariat, in Abuja on Wednesday.
Olawande said that the critical role of non-state actors in advancing transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in governance could not be over emphasised.
“The OGP platform have consistently proven to be an effective channel for sustained engagement between ministries and non-state actors.
“I must commend the OGP secretariat and all stakeholders, both present and absent, whose dedication have been instrumental in advancing this important agenda,” Olawande said.
The Minister noted that the guidance, inspiration and influence of the elder statesmen and civil society leaders were vital to the progress made so far.
“Without their mentorship and encouragement we will not be where we are today. Their values, wisdom, and steadfast support continue to inspire us.
“The distractions are overwhelming, and we must redirect our attention to what truly matters. I cannot be anyone else, I can only be myself, but I strive to reflect the values and integrity passed down to us,” he said.
Olawande added that the importance of instilling strong values, value-driven leadership and civic consciousness on youths of the country was key to building a stronger and more united nation.
Similarly, the Chief Executive Officer, OGP Global Support Unit, Mr Aiden Eyakuze, said that the current challenges facing governance in the country needed value reorientation among young people.
“What we are witnessing in the country today is not so much a lack of accountability, but a gradual loss of values, everyone seems to be focusing on the wrong things.
“The distractions are significant, but the real issues are being overlooked. If I try to be someone else, I will fail. I can only be myself and be true to the principles I uphold.
“The inspiration and support we have received thus far have made us stronger, and for that we are grateful,” he said.
Eyakuze, also, reiterated the importance of inclusive and consistent engagement between ministries and civil society as the cornerstone of open governance.
“The civil society engagement through the OGP platform has proven to be a vital mechanism for regular interaction between ministries and non-state actors.
“The role of the secretariat have been invaluable, without their support, we would not have achieved the milestones we celebrate today.
“We must acknowledge and thank our elders and stakeholders whose wisdom continues to guide us,” the CEO said.
The incoming Co-Chair of the Global OGP, Mr Soji Apampa, commended the minister for his ongoing support and inclusive leadership style.
“We are optimistic about deepening discussions around the future direction of OGP in Nigeria, particularly regarding leadership transition and sustainability.
”This are critical concerns for the success of the OGP agenda. We sincerely appreciate your leadership in driving the development of the current National Action Plan (NAP) and your commitment to securing final approval from the President,” he said.
