The Minister of State for Environment, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako has assured of the Federal Government’s efforts in preventing flooding in the country.
Dr. Salako stated this while receiving a delegation of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Abeokuta Branch, Ogun State led by Chairman of the branch, Engr. Olumuyiwa Idowu, FNSE, recently in his office in Abuja.
Mudasiru Mufutau disclosed this in a statement signed for the Head, Press and Public Relations Unit of the Ministry on Monday.
The Minister said that the Ministry was aware of most flooding locations in Ogun State and the need to carry out a comprehensive approach with the State Government in achieving permanent solution to flooding in the state.
Salako advised the NSE Abeokuta Branch to engage the State Government in advocacy to address all the factors relating to flood in Ogun State.
The Minister also disclosed the need to educate people on the danger of turning drainages and culverts to dump sites and the consequences of flooding as well as the benefits of tree planting.
Earlier, Engr. Olumuyiwa Idowu, FNSE, Chairman of NSE, Abeokuta Branch in his opening remark, briefed the Minister on their comprehensive flood assessment conducted in 33 locations in Abeokuta metropolis and Ilaro of Ogun State which were ravaged with flood due to indiscriminate disposal of refuse in drainages.
Engineer Idowu called on the authorities for the holistic assessment of all critical infrastructures in Ogun State that were currently at the stage of collapsing.
He solicited for the Minister’s support for the full implementation of their assessment report which was before the Ogun State Government.
