The National Emergency Management Agency has urged Nigerians to stand steadfast in the midst of the reported case of ebola virus in the country.
A message from Mrs Zubaida Umar, NEMA’s Director General on Wednesday advised Nigerians to remain calm, vigilant and follow official health advice and also avoid panic.
Here’s A Full Text Of NEMA’s Message:
Following the confirmation of a case of Ebola Virus Disease in the Federal Capital Territory, I wish to reassure Nigerians that the appropriate public-health authorities are fully engaged.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), working with the FCT Health Services Secretariat and other relevant authorities, are leading the national response.
The confirmed patient has been isolated and is receiving medical care, while contact tracing and surveillance are ongoing.
NEMA recognises and supports the leadership of these health authorities. Our role, within the national emergency-management architecture, is to remain ready to provide appropriate coordination and emergency-support assistance as may be required.
At this time, our most important message to Nigerians is: remain calm, remain vigilant and follow official health advice. There is no need for panic.
Ebola spreads mainly through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person who is ill, or through contaminated materials. Nigerians can substantially reduce their risk by taking simple precautions.
Wash your hands frequently with soap and running water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser. Avoid direct contact with the blood and bodily fluids of anyone suspected of having Ebola. Avoid unsafe contact with wild animals and do not handle dead wild animals.
Do not touch or prepare the body of anyone suspected of dying from Ebola; trained health authorities should manage such burials.
If you develop fever, severe weakness, headache, vomiting or diarrhoea following possible exposure, seek medical guidance immediately. Nigeria Centre for Disease Control
I particularly appeal to Nigerians to cooperate fully with contact-tracing teams and to avoid rumours, misinformation and stigmatisation.
Anyone contacted by public-health officials should provide accurate information and follow their guidance. For official advice or to report a suspected case, the NCDC toll-free number is 6232.
Nigeria successfully contained Ebola in 2014. That experience reminds us that early detection, responsible individual behaviour, effective contact tracing and coordinated institutional action can break the chain of transmission.
NEMA will continue to support the national response as required while reinforcing public awareness and preparedness.
Stay informed. Stay calm. Stay safe. Protect yourself and protect others.
