    By Miriam Humbe

The Director General of Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohamed has alerted that the steady rise in the water levels of river Niger and Benue has gotten to the red Mark.

In a statement personally signed on Friday, the NIHSA boss advised that citizens along river banks relocate to safe locations and secure their lives and property.

Mohammed stressed the need for Nigerian citizens to heed to the Agency’s warning, by doing the needful, clearing their drainages, gutters as well as make way for water run -off.

He also emphasized that the prolonged rain that persisted across the nation had caused some of the devastating flash floods.

The DG reiterated NIHSA’s mandate as regards management and development of the nation’s water Resources, saying that NIHSA will continue to monitor daily, the water levels of our major rivers and tributaries, issuing flood warning and alerts along with providing flood predictions.

Mohammed said: “NIHSA is pro-actively in synergy with emergency response agencies and the Media.

“It is an effort to help save lives and property of Nigerians in order to abate flood impact, enhance food security, promote national resilience to flood thereby fostering sustainable water resources management”.
