The Nigerian Army has confirmed that investigation has been launched into an allegation of sexual abuse involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, currently serving at Headquarters 3 Division, Jos.

Lieutenant Colonel Olumide Victor Olukoya, the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division disclosed this in a statement signed on Friday.

The statement said the Army “Takes all allegations of sexual abuse, particularly those involving minors and other vulnerable persons, with utmost seriousness.

“Appropriate steps have been initiated to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the reported incident.”

The Army said that since the matter was currently under investigation, it would be “inappropriate to make definitive comments on the culpability or otherwise of any individual at this stage.”

It stressed its commitment to due process, fairness and the protection of the rights and dignity of all parties involved.

The statement further disclosed that relevant civil authorities are also looking into the matter, and the Nigerian Army will cooperate fully to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation in accordance with extant laws and regulations.

The Army reiterated that it placed “a high premium on discipline, professionalism and respect for human dignity.”

It warned that upon conclusion of the investigation, “any personnel found to have acted contrary to the law or established service regulations will be dealt with appropriately.”

Members of the public were urged to refrain from speculation and the dissemination of unverified information that could prejudice the ongoing investigation or compromise the privacy and wellbeing of persons involved, “particularly any minor.”

The Army said further information would be provided “as appropriate, subject to the requirements of the law and the integrity of the investigative process.”
