Ahead of the planned nationwide protest, the Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command, CP Umar Shehu Nadada has emplaced high visibility policing across major towns and villages to protect government installations, and critical private and public infrastructures.
This is in a bid to reassure citizens of the Command’s commitment towards ensuring their safety during the planned nationwide protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
DSP Ramhan Nansel, the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) revealed this in a statement signed on behalf of the CP, Shehu Nadada on Monday.
The Police Command said that it was aware of the constitutional rights of all citizens to peaceful protest.
The Command advised the protesters to ensure all processions are peaceful and conducted within the ambit of the law; as violations of other people’s rights under the guise of protest will not be tolerated.
The Commissioner of Police has therefore, deployed operational and manpower assets of the Command to adequately ensure hitch-free conduct of any procession across the state and warned officers to be civil and professional in the discharge of their duties.
The statement said: “Consequently, the police in collaboration with sister security agencies in the state, will not fold their arms and watch any individual or group that may decide to hide behind peaceful protesters to cause a breakdown of law and order in the state; as any attempt will be met with stiff resistance.
“Finally, CP Nadada urged residents and members of the public to go about their lawful businesses without any fear of criminal intimidation/threat.
“He further calls on parents and guardians to prevail on their children and wards to shun all forms of violence and be law-abiding.”
