The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, (NiMet) through it’s Central Forecasts Office (CFO) has warned of an approaching severe thunderstorm that is observed from the North Eastern part of the country.
NiMet said this in a press statement signed by its General Manager, Public Relations, Muntari Yusuf Ibrahim on Wednesday.
NiMet said: “Severe thunderstorm cells are currently being observed over
the north-eastern parts of the
country including Borno,
Adamawa, Gombe and Taraba;
moving in a North East – South West direction with ground speed of 30Km/h.
These are expected to propagate westward to give squally thunderstorm to some cities.”
The statement said that another thunderstorm cell was observed developing over Jos high ground which was accompanied with squally wind and heavy rains and are expected to propagate westward to affect parts of Gombe, Bauchi, Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, Enugu, Ebonyi, northern Cross River, within the next three to six hours.
The Agency also alerted that parts of Kaduna, FCT and Niger State were expected to experience thunderstorm with moderate to heavy rains within the
next 6 hours.
The statement therefore advised that
where thunderstorms were expected, strong winds were likely to precede the rains and trees, electric poles, unsecured objects and weak buildings may be felled.
NiMet advised the public to be cautious and stay in-doors especially during heavy rainfall to avoid being struck by lightning.
All Airline operators were advised to avail themselves of weather reports
periodically from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.
Disaster risk managers, agencies and individuals were advised to be proactive in order to avert loss of lives and property during the rainy season.
The Agency said that it’s Central Forecast Office would continue to monitor the weather and provide updates when necessary.
