Yesterday, the University of Mkar witnessed a powerful moment as Dr. Jeffrey Kuraun delivered the 19th Distinguished Public Lecture, titled “Navigating an Uncertain Future: Courage, Creativity and Responsibility in Times of Crisis.”

His address struck a chord with students, faculty, and community members, addressing the urgent challenges facing Nigeria and the world today.

Dr. Kuraun began by confronting the realities of an age marked by unrest and unpredictability.

He painted a vivid picture of a global landscape riddled with conflict, climate crises, and economic instability.

In Benue State, these issues manifest as violence and displacement, leaving many young people feeling trapped in a cycle of fear and despair. “Pain, when ignored, festers,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of recognizing collective suffering as a precursor to healing.

Central to his message was a call to action for the youth in attendance. Dr. Kuraun urged students to redefine their roles in society, shifting from passive victims to proactive visionaries.

“You are not just here to absorb knowledge. You are here to co-create the future,” he asserted, inspiring a sense of empowerment among the audience.

He encouraged students to seek education beyond the classroom, equipping themselves with practical skills that address real-world challenges.

Emphasizing the value of creative resilience, he challenged them to embrace innovation and start small projects that can make a difference, no matter how modest.

Building meaningful relationships across diverse backgrounds emerged as another crucial theme in his address, fostering trust and community in a time when such connections are often eroded.

Dr. Kuraun also touched on the significance of mental and spiritual well-being. In turbulent times, he noted, grounding oneself in values and purpose becomes essential.

He encouraged students to prioritize their mental health and seek support when needed, reminding them that faith—whether in oneself or in a higher purpose—can provide strength in adversity.

Moreover, he made it clear that the responsibility for change does not rest solely on the shoulders of citizens. Government, he asserted, must fulfill its obligations, focusing on community-based security initiatives and transparent aid distribution.

The University, too, must rise to the occasion, acting as a leader in social conscience and ethical leadership.

As Dr. Kuraun concluded, he delivered a message of hope: while the future may remain uncertain, it is crucial to confront it with courage and creativity.

“You are the miracle Nigeria is waiting for,” he declared, instilling a sense of urgency and responsibility in the hearts of the audience.

The 19th Distinguished Public Lecture at the University of Mkar was more than an academic event; it was a rallying cry for action.

Dr. Kuraun’s words resonated deeply, reminding everyone present that, in times of crisis, it is the combined efforts of individuals, institutions, and governments that will forge a path toward a brighter and more hopeful future.
