The project is supported by the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund.
The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), in partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria and funding from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), inaugurated a Small Hydropower (SHP) Centre of Excellence in Nigeria on March 30, 2026.

Situated at the University of Abuja, the facility is designed as a regional hub for technical training, research, policy development, and knowledge transfer in small hydropower development for Nigeria and the broader West African sub-region.
The initiative marks a key step in implementing outcomes of the FOCAC Beijing Summit and represents a landmark tripartite cooperation under the Global Development Initiative, bringing together China, Africa, and the United Nations.
The Center is expected to strengthen technical capacity in small hydropower and contribute to improved energy Resilience and sustainable Development across Africa.
